Denny Oughton is in his second season with the program, serving as the director of baseball operations. The native of Puyallup, WA has years of experience at the high school and junior college level as a coach. Oughton, who will turn 40 when Clemson plays host to Western Carolina on March 28, played shortstop for two seasons (1993,94) at Pacific Lutheran in Tacoma, WA. Prior to his two seasons with the Lute program, he played two years at Pierce College in Tacoma.

After his playing days, Oughton was an assistant coach at his high school alma mater, Rogers High School in Puyallup, WA, for three seasons (1993-95). In his first season (1993) with the Ram program, he helped lead Rogers High School to the Final Four of the state tournament in Washington's highest classification. In all three years with the Rams, they finished in the top 10 in the state tournament. They also had a combined record of 51-14 during his tenure at Rogers High.

After two years (1996,97) as an assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Puyallup High School, he served as head coach at Pierce College (1998) and Green River Community College (1999-01). In three seasons at Green River Community College, he coached 12 players who earned all-conference honors.

From 2001-03, Oughton was the head coach of Athletes in Action Central America Tour. There, he coached in 14 different countries in Central and South America. In July of 2002, he coached against the Nicaraguan National Team, coached by former Major League star righthander Dennis Martinez, in Managua.

He has also been head coach of several summer league teams. In 1996 with the Rainier Baseball Academy, he led his team to the AAU Pacific Northwest region championship and coached in the Junior Olympics in New Orleans, LA. That squad had six players that went on to play baseball at the Division I level. He was also head coach of Hurricane Baseball Academy (2003) and Rainier Baseball Club (2004). The Hurricane team finished in seventh place out of 64 teams in the USABF World Series in San Diego, CA, while the Rainier Baseball Club had a 64-8 record.

Oughton, who wears #51, is from the same state (Washington) that has sent 10 players to Clemson since the 2000 season, including current Tiger Alex Burg (C/OF). In his first season at Clemson, his services were valuable during the Tigers' trip to the 2006 College World Series.

Oughton received a bachelor of arts degree from Pacific Lutheran in 1995. He earned a masters degree in educational leadership at Clemson in 2006 with a 3.85 GPA. Oughton was born March 28, 1967 in Lakewood, WA and is single.
