Head Coach Jack Leggett on Vaughn: "Matt is a righthander who has been in our program for three years and is one of our team captains. He has great leadership qualities with tremendous focus and concentration. He is a great competitor and is going to pitch a lot of innings. Whatever role we expect out of him, he's going to give us because he is that focused and unselfish."

Team co-captain in 2008...has seen an increased role during his career as a long reliever and spot starter...has the makeup and competitiveness to be a closer...has a 4-1 record, 4.61 ERA, and one save in 29 appearances (two starts) in his career...in 52.2 innings pitched, he has allowed 63 hits (.292 opponents' batting average) and 21 walks with 52 strikeouts...has allowed just three home runs.

2006: Had an 0-1 record and 10.12 ERA in 13 appearances (one start)...in 13.1 innings pitched, he allowed 22 hits and seven walks with 15 strikeouts...did not allow a stolen base...held opponents to a .250 batting average with two outs...held opponents to 2-for-11 (.182) with runners on base and two outs...was on the 25-man ACC Tournament roster, but he did not travel to Omaha with the team...pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in relief at College of Charleston on Mar. 3; he allowed no hits and no walks with three strikeouts while pitching near his hometown...pitched 2.0 perfect innings in relief with three strikeouts against Elon on March 22...pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout against Maryland on Apr. 9...pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in the second game of a doubleheader at Duke on May 8.

BEFORE CLEMSON: All-state selection and member of the state championship team as a sophomore at Summerville High School...lettered four times in baseball and four times in football at Summerville High, where he was coached by Burt Bazzle...standout quarterback at Summerville High School under legendary Head Coach John McKissick, the nation's winningest high school coach...one of the top-50 quarterbacks in the nation according to PrepStar...attended the same high school as Steven Jackson (2001-04), another tall righthander from Summerville who played at Clemson and wore #22.

PERSONAL: Two-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll...his father Tim played football at South Carolina (1981)...majoring in management...born Matthew Harold Vaughn on Jun. 13, 1986 in Warner Robins, GA.
