F.E. "Boo" Armstrong played football at Clemson from 1916-20. He was a third-team halfback in 1916, which was the first season Clemson put numbers on their uniforms. He was a second-team halfback in 1917 and became a starter in 1918. When quarterback Stumpy Banks left that year to enter the military, Armstrong took over as team captain. He earned All-State honors in 1919 and was again team captain the next two years. Armstrong was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1978.
