Gary Barnes was a first-team All-ACC receiver in 1959, his sophomore year, when he helped the Tigers to a 9-2 record. He will always be remembered for his 68-yard touchdown reception from Harvey White in the fourth quarter of the 1959 Bluebonnet Bowl win over seventh-ranked TCU. At the time, it was the longest touchdown reception in Clemson bowl history. In 1961, he was a second-team All-ACC selection and an All-American Honorable Mention. After the season, he was invited to the East-West Shrine Bowl and the Hula Bowl.
Barnes was a third-round draft pick following his senior year and became the first player to sign a contract in Atlanta Falcons history. He won a championship in 1962 with the Green Bay Packers. In 1996, he was named to Clemson's Centennial team. He was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 2002 and the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.
