Overall: First student-athlete in Clemson history to be first-team Academic All-American twice...first Clemson athlete to be an All-American on the field of play in the classroom in two different seasons...first golfer in Clemson history to start on four straight top 10 teams... first Clemson athlete since the 1970s (men's soccer) to do it...starter on three ACC Championship teams at Clemson, first Tiger to do that since Chris Patton...only Nicky Goetze, currently head coach at Mississippi State, has played more rounds at Clemson than Byrd...first four-time first-team All-ACC golfer in Clemson history...already has Clemson career records for rounds under par, rounds at par or better and rounds at 75 or better...second in school history in career top 10 finishes, one off the record...tied Clemson record for career rounds in the 60s with a 69 in the second round at the NCAAs...had 30 tying mark by Chris Patton (30)... third in Clemson history in career stroke average...number-two ranked amateur in the nation heading into the spring of 2000....has a 3.6 career GPA in the classroom to go with his outstanding record on the course...just the seventh athlete in Clemson history, regardless of sport, to be first team All-American on the course and in the classroom in the same year...first-team All-American according to the Golf Coaches Association on the course and in the classroom in 1998-99, he was also first-team Academic All-American according to CoSIDA...first golfer in Clemson history to be named first-team All-ACC as a freshman....preseason All-American for 1999-00 and a top reason Clemson was ranked number-one in the nation most of the fall season...has two tournament victories for his career, the first spring tournament his freshman year (Puerto Rico) and the first tournament of the fall of his junior year (The Ridges)....named IPTAY Athlete of the Year for the Clemson Athletic Department for the 1998-99 academic year, he was honored in front of 86,000 people prior to the Clemson vs. Florida State football game on October 23, 1999.
1999-00: Had 71.32 stroke average in the spring, second best on the Clemson team...also had 12 under par rounds in his 22 spring rounds... finished in the top five in three straight events including a #4 at the ACC and a #4 at the NCAAs... under par in four of his last six events...the +2 at the NCAA East Regional must have felt like an under par tournament because of the weather conditions....had a 291 at the NCAA Championships, helping Tigers to a seventh place finish...Tigers finished in top eight of the NCAA Tournament all four years he was on the team...had fifth place finish for a 209 score, his low of the spring, at the US Collegiate, a tournament televised on ESPN...had a 218 at the Preview in the Fall on the Grand National Course...had another strong fall with 71.50 stroke average playing for the Tigers...had two top 10 finishes, including seventh place at the Jerry Pate where his 207 score helped lead Clemson to the team championship...also shot even par at the Golf World and +1 at the Carpet Classic...missed the Ridges, where he won in 1998, due to his play for the United States in the Walker Cup...his 71.50 was second best among the Tigers in the fall, he was three-under-par for the fall, all 12 of his rounds were at 75 or better and eight were par or better....ranked in the top 20 all year in all the computer stat polls, finished his senior year 11th by Sagarin and 14th by MasterCard.
Summer 1999: Had great summer that led to berth on the United States Walker Cup team...finished with a 1-3 record at the Walker Cup...third Clemson player in history to be chosen for the United States Walker Cup team, Charles Warren and Kevin Johnson are the others...won the Carolinas Golf Association Amateur Championship and the Northeast Amateur...shot 70-64-71-69 at the Northeast Amateur, the 64 was his lowest tournament round ever...missed 30 of 72 greens at the Northeast Amateur, but got up and down for par 25 times...won the championship of the Carolinas Amateur with a 6 and 4 36-hole win over Steve Wright...finished third at the Southern Amateur and was runnerup at the Porter Cup in New York, he lost in a playoff to Hunter Haas...shot 66 in final round to force that playoff...posted a 4-0 record at the Palmer Cup, leading the United States to a 17.5 to 6.5 victory...qualified for the United States Amateur match play, but lost in the first round at the event played at Pebble Beach...finished second at the South Carolina Amateur to teammate Lucas Glover, Byrd shot 66 in the final round to finish 14 under for the tournament, but lost by a shot...named the amateur golfer of the year in the state of South Carolina by the South Carolina Golf Association.
1998-99: First-team All-American on the course and in the classroom... Clemson's stroke average leader for the year with a 72.10 average, that figure is fourth best in Clemson history for a season...ranks among the top 15 golfers in the nation in all three polls...finished 14th in the Golfstat Cup race, ranked 6th according to Mastercard and 7th by Sagarin...had 71.00 average for five events in the fall and was 72.75 for his rounds in the spring...ranked second in the nation in total short game...had 10 rounds in the 60s this year, third best in Clemson history...had 36 rounds at 75 or under, tied for second in Clemson history...had seven top 10 finishes, also tied for fourth best in Clemson history...his 16 under-par rounds were fifth best in school history...finished in the top 10 in all five fall events, including medalist honors at The Ridges Intercollegiate held in Johnson City, TN...shot a nine-under 207 in winning the event, he shot 70 or better for three straight rounds...led Clemson to the team championship...had a second-place finish at the Golf World at the Arthur Hills Course at Palmetto in Hilton Head...finished strong at that event with 69 and 68 in the last two rounds after opening 75...four-under overall for the fall..shot another 207 at the Jerry Pate (par 71) and his six-under score was tied for sixth with teammate Michael Hoey...entered the spring with a streak of five straight top 10 finishes, the longest streak of its kind in Clemson history...helped Clemson to the championship round of the Rolex Match Play for the second straight fall, he had a dominating 7&6 victory over Georgia's Jeremy Parrott...top finish of the spring was fourth place at the Schenkel...second round was his best, he has five of his 10 rounds in the 60s in the second round this year...finished the spring with a 16th place individual finish at NCAA national event at Hazeltine...had three straight 73s to open the event and help Clemson to eighth-place finish...ranked in the top 20 in the nation in seven different stat categories according to the final Golfstat rankings.
1997-98: First-team All-ACC as a sophomore and an honorable mention All-American...had a 72.33 stroke average, third best on the team, but fifth best in Clemson history....it was also the best ever by a Clemson sophomore...had seven top 10 finishes, most on the team, yes even one more than National Player of the Year Charles Warren...did not win an event in 1997-98, but had four number-four finishes...had nine rounds in the 60s, second best on the Clemson team and third highest total for a season in Clemson history...had 18 under-par rounds for the year, second to Charles Warren's record 23...the 18 under-par rounds tied for second best in Clemson history...33 of his 40 rounds were at par or better...had career best 65 at the Golf Digest in March, that was a seven-under par round and was best by a Tiger all year and best by a Tiger since Joey Maxon's 65 in the first round of the 1996 Carpet Classic..had two fourth-place finishes in the Fall, the Palmetto and the Jerry Pate...tied for Clemson's top performer at the Palmetto with Charles Warren, he tied with Lucas Glover as top performer at the Jerry Pate, an event Clemson won...had his best round of the Fall at the Palmetto Classic when he had a 67, that tied for the best by a Tiger all Fall...that 67 contributed to Clemson's team round of 273, lowest round in Clemson history.
In 1996-97: Became first Clemson freshman to earn first-team All-ACC honors...his 73.89 stroke average is fifth best ever for a Clemson freshman...first freshman in 10 years to win a tournament, he captured the Puerto Rico Classic in the first tournament of the Spring season with a 212 performance, four-under-par...could tell from early in the season that he would have an impact, he was Clemson's medalist at the Topy Cup in Japan in his very first fall tournament as a Tiger...sixth at that tournament overall...fourth in the nation in rounds played among freshmen...30th in the country in fewest putts per round with 30.5...38th in the nation in birdie conversion...had 92 birdies for the season, 76th in the country......had three tournaments in which he was under par, he also did it at the Liberty Classic...finished in the top 10 in six tournaments as a freshman tied for the best on the team and a record for a Clemson freshman...he broke Kevin Johnson's freshman record of five in 1987...had three straight top 10 finishes to open his first spring season, Puerto Rico, Golf Digest and Furman...also had seventh-place finish at the ACC and fourth-place at the Liberty Invitational...struggled at the NCAA Tournament, but did have a final round 72 that helped Clemson to third-place national finish...strongest in the final round his freshman year, he had a 73.4 average...consistent performer as a freshman, he had a 73.89 overall average for the year, 73.77 in the Spring.
In High School: The 4-A regional champon in 1994, 1995 and 1996...all-state selection all four years of high school...won the Southern Cross three consecutive years...number-two in the state Player of the Year award race in 1995...Carolina's Junior State Champion in 1995...U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier in 1995...played his high school golf at Spring Valley for Coach Ron Intermill and Allan Hancock...Personal Notes: Born January 27, 1978 in Anderson, SC...his father, James E. Byrd, Jr, played four years of football at North Carolina...brother Jordan E. Byrd was a member of the Furman golf team and they competed against each other in the Furman Invitational in 1996-97.
